27 July: dVerse Quadrille

Great-Great-Grandad’s Candleholder

it sits there on the mantlepiece
rich patina-wrapped,
a bottom-weighted brass candleholder.
the type used on a ship.
gravity always keeps it upright,
not that we make waves in the living room,
but it’s a family heirloom,
and we’re deep-seated
in our nautical gauge.

  1. Nice use of the prompt. I enjoyed this piece. A wonderful tribute to something ageless.

  2. “not that we make waves in the living room” ….loved that
An interesting heirloom that I’m sure has many stories to tell.
