17 June: Those Weeds

an abandoned basketball court

Overgrown Weeds

The rain is hot, and he says – he’s going
to take off his shoes ’cause
he shoots hoops better that way, and
the ball crashes against the fence,
and he cusses the way 10-year old boys
from his side of town cuss,
and two girls on a swing giggle,
kick their feet up to the steel sky,
and the future is doubtful here – except
for those overgrown weeds.

Inspired by Twiglet #283 “steel sky”. Repetition: 10.6.8.8. etc. ©Misky 2022 Shared with #amwriting on Twitter. Photo by Benjamin Behre on Unsplash (Public Domain). I watched this particular scene play-out as Mr Misky attended his annual diabetic retinopathy screening at the hospital. The community centre was across the street.

  1. Great visuals in this piece – how it moves from from the player to the girls to the sky.

  4. “and two girls on a swing giggle,
kick their feet up to the steel sky” that line is so iconic. I remember those days
