GloPoWriMo Day 10: Love & Taste

springer spaniel

Once, right there
by the radio,

which was on mostly in the morning for an hour, or when we left home so the house didn’t seem empty, and for most hours of the day, especially as old age set in,

sleeping with sunlight
pouring on her like
a gentle massage,

and right there,
with a direct view
of the kitchen,

and out of the way of the natural flow of grandchildren racing by, and with an anticipatory view of the morning post arriving through the slot in the front door,

once right there,
was the best dog
I’ve ever loved.

Taste (a kimo poem)

A perfect red tomato, salt, mayo,
Like my mother grew back when.
That first taste of summer.

  1. I love the structure of your love poem, Marilyn, and that you have written about the love of: a pet. I especially love the image of dog, before it has been made explicit, in the lines:
    ‘slept with sunlight
    pouring on her like
    a gentle massage’;
    and a tomato. Delicious!

    1. You went into the spam folder! Silly WordPress. Anyway, thank you!

  2. Misky, I think you used those longer lines to great effect – especially that bit about “the natural flow” … very nice!

    1. There’s hardly a day that goes by that I don’t think of her, and she’s been for years.

  8. Oh, Misky. That first one has given me a rather large lump in my throat, as I am currently on “the best dog I’ve ever loved,” and she is 11 this year.

    1. I promise you, De, the memory of her never leaves you. Molly still makes me smile, just the thought of her.❤️

  9. A beautiful pair of sweet memories.
