13.03.22 Big City Streets

Big city traffic and noise

To Big City Streets

To all those
flags that hang limp as sullen moods,
like gargoyles glaring on crowds below,
and to all those windows polished clean,

gleaming spring, puts the sun to shame,
and to all those pedestrians — the girls
in tight shirts and shorts — the boys
in slung-low jeans and long broad grins,

and fathers with belted bellies, and
mothers with bulging purses and crying
babies, and to all the faded white lines
that divide up streets and carve opinion,

and to sirens and chaos, and
to all the clatter and clutter,
to all the muffle and murmur,
to all those languages of big cities –

may we find a moment’s precious peace
in some undiscovered corner.

  1. This is lovely. A toast, a toast to life. My favourite bits, if I really have to choose were the flags limp as sullen moods, and the belted bellies! 😂
