A Still Life of a Winter’s Night
The fireplace is lit, its flame
dancing with the surface
of the window. A candle
stiff and still on the table,
with the last heel from a loaf,
dried onions and cheese
with a sip of sweet wine.
No need to whisper that
the cupboard is bare, or
that the empty knocking is
not the beat of ones heart.

The title captures the poem; the poem captures the night; the night captures my heart1

So beautiful. I love the heel of bread. And that last stanza is heart breaking.

No better visual for the empty fridge concept, Misky, and THANK YOU for including the flames we can’t see reflected in the window. Brilliant.
Have a bliss-filled day, Sister.
