AN OWL ON A BARE BRANCH
An owl stands
and looks backward.
Its face closed.
Impenetrable.
Distant.
A freezing explanation
hangs in its mouth.
A mouse.
Limp.
Glossy black as the night.
The owl turns its head away,
wings lift,
and it flies up
and out of the night.
