He & I – a World Covered in Buttons
We take a brisk walk in the forest.
Pine air.
Mud sings
in the rubber soles of our shoes.
A euphoric dog slips in and out
of rust-dried bracken, its tail
cycling the air for balance.
Cold haunts the shadows here.
it’s sodden and bare, one expects
it in January after sliding rain.
He squints at his shoes.
I’ll throw them in the wash, I tell him.
We’ll listen to them slap around like
fish out of water.
A gleam of sun breaks through.
Reminds me – there’s no need
to live life with intensity …..
….. unless your world is covered
in buttons that aren’t yours.

A world all buttoned up. What would we do witness buttons, scattered everywhere like acorns? Love this.
