Ekphrastic: Saint on the Half-Hinged Shingle

The Half-Hinged Shingle in Hunters in the Snow

He’s a saint, and dances
like a tree frog,

heedless merriment as it’s
raining on his head,

and the cold mist always rises
like morning prayers to heaven.

His is a small story of simple
words,

drawn on an half-hinged shingle
above the tavern door.

He’s a godly soul, but still
afraid of shadows at night.

      1. PS We had to write a poem about that painting when I was at Uni. I recognised the title. I like how you’ve zoomed in on a small detail of it. I wonder if I can find that poem?

        1. I’ve done several ekphrastic pieces from Bruegel the Elder’s images. He’s fun to write from. I hope you find your poem. I’d love to read it.
