It's Still Life

There’s an Eagle Sitting on the Marlboro Sign

I’m at a loss with all these signs.
I need some Left Right signs.
This Way Up. Down. Yes. No.

I always think: what would Dad do.

I still talk to you, you know,
like you’re a fixed star,
still governing my life
and direction. And yes,

that’s me occasionally
screaming at the sky,
and stealing lullabies
on a restless night.

I’ll tell you one thing, sunflowers
have it straight, their round faces
turning with the sun, being both
attentive and dismissive. And I

dreamt that I filled my shelves
with papyrus rolls
and dried buggy roses
still wet from the garden.

I shrug-off most of my dreams.
Don’t understand the signs.

But that eagle sitting
on the Marlboro sign,
well, some signs
you just don’t forget.
