Miz Quickly’s Day 3: Now/Then/When

Blackberrying Couplets

blackberries
ping – the bottom of a pail,

stick stuck pricked by
briars and vines, like ravenous arms in

august heat
and fireweed, stumps and trees against

bare legs
bumps and welts, itch and scratch, fire ants

lotions dab
on calamine, paste of soda, vinegar, whine

blackberries
in a pot, a spill of sugar, a skin of jam

blackberries
so viciously sublime

  1. I enjoy the imagery of the vines like ravenous arms.

  2. I love it! All of it!! The last couplet is spot on and I want to use that last line to describe your poem. Viciously sublime. πŸ˜€

    1. I did indeed. This activity needs a child protection order! I still have a scar on my arm from when I fell into brambles whilst reaching for the plumpest berries. And the fire ants 🐜 are true; I’ve scars on my thumb from those little beasties as well. Did I mention the wasp nest? Evil suckers. πŸ˜‚

            2. LOL; are you pronouncing berry like bury or bury like berry?
              To bury
              your berries
              don’t hurry
              no worries!

            5. I have the Bury/worry pronunciation right for some ridiculous reason (there’s a Bury in West Sussex).
