A Conversation with a Green Tomato
I’m all green and hard to my core,
dozing on my back, here in leaves.
But I want to get out of this place,
get out of this heat below glass,
into some cool quarrelling bar,
talking up some big tomato or
easing up to some beefy sort, or
a right spicy Bloody Mary, flirty
and cheap as Chinese vodka.
And I’ll tell you, I don’t much like
being stewed in some pot, or
sliced on to toasted with mayo.
So just leave me here on my back
in the leaves, and one day, maybe,
I’ll break out of this green, and be
bright as reddest red wants to be.
