Miz Quickly’s Day 29: Once Upon A Time

A Giddy Bit of Bedlam

Once upon a time, the garden
was red and yellow, gaudy,
blistering and indestructible.
But this is October’s end.

October is for storage, sugared fruit
and blanched beans. For blossoms
that flop into the periphery of winter.
For fern and flower in doddering rain.

I watch low stars frosty in the sky,
and the moon bald and shiny, and
my eyes smile with accomplishment.
Summer was a giddy bit of bedlam.

  1. Seasons come and go, eh? And each has its merits and its drawbacks. But they all fade – or vanish overnight – and we remember. We had a hard frost this morning; looked like snow for a minute. My Beloved Sandra’s a Summer lover. She’s been frowning about Autumn, but you should have seen her expression this morning when she looked out on our white lawn…
    Have a great day, Misky.

    1. I moved my more tender herbs into the greenhouse so they can survive future frosts. Fingers crossed.

      1. I moved some to my patio… but I don’t have a greenhouse so they might end up in the house! Good luck with your herbs. 🥗

  4. I love this! You think it’s anti winter but then that last line makes you smile and it feels happy after all. And I love “doddering rain” and the bald moon.

    1. I’m rereading The Bell Jar, and the word “doddering” jumped out at me. I thought, I must find a way to use the word. 😆

      1. Ha ha ha. I read The Bell Jar when I was at Uni but don’t remember that word from it. I love it for rain.
