dVerse Quadrille: Ashes

The Railroad’s Cottages

Those railroad cottages with
endlessly long roof ridges,
chimney ash to rise and fall.

Living’s not easy by the rail-line.

Clotheslines with shirts drying.
Trouser legs frozen. A woman’s
crying heart drying in the cold.

And another train flashes its
rumbling noise across the window.

  2. Having lived for a few years near tracks in Baltimore (long, long ago) this inescapable rumbling resonated with me, Misky. Thanks

    1. We live far enough away where we only hear the train whistling as it passes through our local station. I rather like the sound of it.
