dVerse Quadrille: Ashes

dVerse Quadrille: Ashes

The Railroad’s Cottages

Those railroad cottages with
endlessly long roof ridges,
chimney ash to rise and fall.

Living’s not easy by the rail-line.

Clotheslines with shirts drying.
Trouser legs frozen. A woman’s
crying heart drying in the cold.

And another train flashes its
rumbling noise across the window.

    • We live far enough away where we only hear the train whistling as it passes through our local station. I rather like the sound of it.
