The Imprint of Northleach Church
It seems to me
the weight of years,
your deeds
your tears are
pressed against your back.
Do they still
press?
Do you still
bend to the will of worms?
By day, your shadow is your
cover, and by night
lights are lit, and
your shadow hovers.
Do you hear our
laughter,
footsteps,
lover’s whispers
as you wait for God’s return,
that promise of
a second coming.
It was a promise from
a pulpit stern, imprinted
on you from birth.

I love wandering about old churches. I’m not a believer, but there is something about a stone-mason, say, spending probably his entire working life on a single project.

You and me both, and I love looking at the headstones, mostly because they’re selected by the survivors rather than the deceased.

The photo and the poem fit together wonderfully. I love that line about bending to the will of worms. 🙂

Great poem, Misky. It is kind of spooky. I read it three times. I really like it.

Thank you. Those near-front headstones could so easily look like a head and shoulders at night. I must say, I love how soil subsides in a graveyard. 😂
