Miz Quickly’s 10th August

Take a Walk in a Woman’s Shoes

My feet protest,
these shoes they detest.

I’d described it as
      having a wounded second skin,
      invisible damage, but
      getting through the day
      with a smile.

You can pretend to be mean
with keys tight between
your fingers.
      Ready to cut and run.
      Ready when someone
                    emerges like a shadow.

Take a walk in our shoes,
in a carpark. In the dark.

Am I allowed
to hear my alarm bells ring,
and protest
when I feel unsafe.

Sometimes I hear myself
humming in my head.
A happy song.

I have no appetite
for these shoes.

  1. Spookily relatable. I like the rhythm of this poem. It has a zing .. almost like a rap song. It suits the shoes, the beat, the feet.

    1. I’m sure it’s relatable to many women. I questioned the need for a trigger warning but decided against it. Many years ago, I kicked off my heels and ran, thinking someone was following me in a multi-storey carpark. Scared the bejesus out of me.

      1. Urgh. How awful. I am pretty tall and have never felt the need for heels. Mr Worms just sees how uncomfortable they must be and doesn’t perceive them as beautiful. So I have but rarely worn them. They are definitely an impediment to speed/agility. As are very tight skirts. It’s an interesting thing to ponder these fashions in the light of women’s vulnerability.

        1. I’m 5’7″ and my husband is 6’4″ so I always had the option to go up or down. I usually aim for flats now.

  2. This poem was made for reading, more so than those shoes were made for walking. How do women walk in those high heeled jobbies anyway?🙂
