Miz Quickly’s Loaded Words

Steep

at the bottom of the hill
      where every rippling southeast breeze
used to hit the creek bed straight-on,
      where that one-legged black crow
used to nest until a cat got it, although
a few years later a fox ate that same cat,
and down there where I heard a cuckoo,
but having never heard a real one before,
mistook it for one of those clocks bought
on a holiday cruise down the Mosel,
but like I said, down there where clutter
and litter collects in the brambles, and
catches on the wild carrot and cowslip,
is a creek that is a mere putrid seep nowadays.

  1. You really knew of a fox killing a cat?

      1. Ah, yes, if it was damaged I could imagine.
We spoke to a vet once about foxes taking cats, because we’re out in the country, we have cats and there are plenty of foxes about. The vet said he’d never known it to happen in 40 years.

        1. We watched a stand-off between a cat and a fox in the lane. A lot of noise and posturing, but it was eventually the cat that slipped away into the hedgerows. So, I’m not 100% convinced.

  2. I shouldn’t have, but the thought of that fox giving the cat its comeuppance really made me chuckle. 😂
