for Miz Quickly: Oh Brave

Be Brave

I.
I’m older now. Loved
And well worn.
Like a favourite pair of shoes, and
I’ve a happy heart for
Simple things.
Bravery. Faithfulness. Patience,
Except when it comes to fishing.

II.
My sister loves fishing. She braves
Freezing water for
Hours on end with
Nothing more than a shiver
To show for it. My dad loved
Fishing. We scattered his
Ashes on the deep flowing water
Of his favourite fishing spot.
There was so much of him
That he turned the river milky.

III.
Looking back, I learnt a lot
From my mother. How to be
Frugal without being mean,
Never pinching pennies
On someone else.
It’s a new brave economy,
Something to lean on. Like
A crutch. A knuckle-rubbed
Rosary. Be brave, my
Thin-skinned pride.

      1. I think that must be what they do down here – I’m by a trout river, although I never picked up a fishing rod in my life..

  2. There are three very different calls in each of the sections which made me stop and think much more than if they flowed consistently with one voice.
