11 May 2021: dVerse Prosery

Prose: A Peripheral View

The clouds open like windows for her – red billowing fields of wild poppies, dabs of Monet white-washed daisies. Spring rain allows nothing to stay asleep for long. Cornflowers will come along next in this wide green world.

The air flutters with colour, and her thoughts are an utter abandonment of things that can slip from attention, that fall between gaps. She is held by bird song and the urgent call of hatchlings – only mouths are we who sing(s).

The distant heart, which safely exists in the center of all things is this vision of a young and impressionable girl. That girl who could’ve been me.

For dVerse Prosery, including the unaltered phrase “Only mouths are we. Who sings the distant heart which safely exists in the center of all things?” Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926), ‘Heartbeat’ . Image is by Louis Ritman, Flower Garden, ca. 1913. Shared with @Experimentsinfc #APoemADay on Twitter   ©Misky 2021

  4. A beautiful ekphrastic response, Marilyn! I love the clouds that open like windows and the wonderful dabs of colour in the ‘wide green world’. You split the prompt line expertly with the ‘urgent call of hatchlings’.

    1. Thanks, Kim. The prompt line was so long that I felt I needed to do something different with it.

  8. I would like to think we were all that young once, not worrying about things we could not control.
Too soon though we will be as our elders in that same position – but not knowing where the time all went.
