A Poem Inspired by Mary Oliver’s Song of Autumn
I’ve never been one to stand
in the midday sun, but here I am,
noon,
and my shadow
has disappeared behind a cloud,
and I’m watching ants shift sand
from below the patio slabs.
Raindrops splash, and I feel
thunder underfoot.
The ants
pause.
I pause.
We taste the air, and
smell the weather change.
And then their work resumes.
Again. Raindrops. Splashes.
They change direction. Divert attention,
and I consider
creation,
and nature’s hold over us. I realise
I’ve never been one to ask
if leaves dream in Autumn, or
if God
gives a second’s thought
to ants
shifting sand in
the rain.
I’ve never been one
to do that sort of thing.

Appointment with a Dentist
Is it wise
to have a dentist
prise
tartar off ones
teeth in
the midst of
a pandemic…
