Day 2 NaPoWriMo 2021

I.
Across the Sea

At the end of the pier
is a bell that looks like
a silver charm. Wind

teases the clapper,
and its tone leaves
my ears with wings
across the waves.

It passes through light,
and travels. I will do
the same, one day.

II.
These Old Roads

Left or right
or straight on,
beyond the bridge
or back behind and
over Furnace Ridge,
it matters not which
this or that,
as I’ve walked them
all before.

IV.

1.

Sowing Colour

sowing,
not sewing,
so soon
          tomatoes
          cucumbers
          chilli peppers
          marigolds
          sage and chives and thyme
          and sweet peas.
growing every
          colour of summer.

2.

Homegrown for the Table

He’s been sowing,
though not sewing, he’s quick to state,
and so we will soon
have tomatoes and
          cucumbers and chilli peppers
          and marigolds and sweet peas,
and after lunch he was
staining lumber,  planks and pallets
of dusty green and pale blue.
He’s growing every
          colour of summer.

  1. Minky, the very instant I saw the top photograph for Day 2 I knew with all certainty that it was The Cobb, looking east, Lyme Regis – Good ol’ Golden Cap in the distance like a giant knuckle! (I have a similar shot on my page). I grew up in Charmouth, which is the little spread of houses you can see in the left of the picture, where the coast line falls away to beach level before rising again. The Char river meanders into the sea from here, its course, at the littoral, altered daily by the coming and going tides. Lovely work!

    1. I live very near the West Sussex coast, but Dorset, and particularly Lyme Regis, is one of my favourite places on earth. And thanks for reading along this month, Nick.

  3. I loved the idea of the wind teasing the bell’s clapper. The little sauce-box!

  5. I especially enjoyed “He’s growing every color of summer.” Simple, yet it says so much.
