Who Knew

I pull out a green shoot,
hoping it’s a weed.

One year, I pulled out
most of the poppy seedlings,
thinking they were weeds.

Opium poppies, so I am told.

And there next to the weeds
is a worm – tied in a knot.

  1. That’s exactly the kind of thing I would do – pull out seedlings, thinking they were weeds. One of the many reasons I avoid gardening! An interesting horticulturally themed quadrille!

    1. I know now to let them grow a bit longer so they’re more easily identified. When the sun is shining, I’m just dying to get myself outside and pull stuff up!

  2. Oh it’s been ages since I held an earthworm in hand. My planting is all in pots now, no weeds, but I remember the challenge of gardens. This took me back.

    1. My husband has a very green thumb and lots of muscle, so I leave most of it to him. The roses are mine though; he never prunes them right. 😂

  4. This made me laugh! I think I will tell my hubby this is why he doesn’t want me pulling weeds. 😆

  6. If I had those kinds of worms in my garden, the magpie and the robin would have eaten them all by now!

    1. The robins love it when we turn the soil. They’re right there by our feet, pulling at worms.

  7. I remember when my mother didn’t pick the weeds under the bird feeder… it was apparently real weed that grew.

  8. Methinks that worm got too close to the opium poppies! Cool quadrille!

  9. It’s funny that I almost chose “worm” as our quadrille word. He still made it into the scene…knotted and all.
I pulled up a whole rhubarb plant in my eagerness to pull weeds. You are not alone.

  11. It’s a hit & miss at times.. one year I forgot the carrots, but I remembered the potatoes 🙂.
That worm.. wonder if someone tied him in a knot to take a picture? So interesting. A nice write.

    1. Worms do that instinctively when they’re dehydrated.

      1. That’s so interesting. I have to pay closer attention when I’m digging in the garden. Thanks🙂
