For International Women’s Day: IWD 2021

The Mystique of Copper Penny

I’m 5. Almost 6.
I’m watching my mother.

How do you do that, Mum?

She’s putting on lipstick
without looking in the mirror.

Avon. Copper Penny.
When Avon discontinued that colour,
Mum cried. Then ordered two dozen.

Practice, she said, like when
you learned to tie your shoes
before going to kindergarten.

Using the word “mirror” from Miz Q list. Written for International Women’s Day. For my mother who always did things her own way. #ChooseToChallenge  #IWD2021 #APoemADay on Twitter   © Misky 2021 – Image from State Library of Queensland. Violet Trundle sewing with a Singer sewing machine at her home in Hughenden, Queensland.

  2. I remember being mystified by my mum’s lipstick and (most especially) nail polish. I didn’t even want to put it on, just play with the bottles which were like magical potions to me!

    1. My Mum only wore lipstick, and Evening in Paris perfume. I don’t think they make the latter any more.
