dVerse’s Eagle Haibun

I’ve seen a raven, seen a crow, seen a robin in the hedgerow. Once saw a hawk, might’ve been a falcon, or maybe a kite, seen lots of pheasants, and a few dead ones on the road, and I’ve seen a dozen starlings strip a cherry tree. But I’ve never seen an eagle, and doubt I ever will. I’ve seen sparrows and wrens feasting on the lawn, blue tits and chaffinch picking over seed, I’ve seen geese gobble up slugs, and magpies blind a newborn lamb, and I’ve even seen a condor … at the zoo … in an aviary … a couple of times. But I’ve never seen an eagle, and doubt I ever will.

  1. A wistful haibun and a beautiful haiku to end it. There’s always a bird of prey centre, depending on how you feel about those. Seeing them in the wild is so much more thrilling though!
