Somewhere In The Past
We were into masks that year.
We were all eyes. waiting to
mix with the sky, and outside,
every day, church bells rang.
It was cold
though it might’ve been green, too.
Hedgerows grew. Daffodils swayed,
tall as a congregation of choristers.
We stayed close to home, and
we walked alone in open spaces.
Called it safety. Safe behind glass.
Breathed less air. Fretted more.
That first spring opened to us
like a gate, but we stayed close.
We were neither Lost nor Found,
when we found ourselves, humbled
by a churned-up-inside-feeling.

I hope it will all be a distant memory soon, if that isn’t a contradiction in terms!
