AprPAD: Day 20

NaPoWriMo Day 20: write about a handmade gift

That’s the Size of It

On the wall
is a piece of paper.
The grandkids
traced their hands.

Ethan and Emma’s hands
are the same size.
Luisa’s hand is smaller
than Emma’s thumb.

Nico wasn’t
in the picture yet.
That was 2-years ago.
I need a new picture.

PA Day 20: an isolation poem

Two Metres

I can read the signs;
my car is covered
in a screed of pollen.

The apple trees are
blooming cotton candy
and marshmallows.

A man with his dog
are adhering to rules.
Social distancing.

#porchprompts The first line of this
poem (It was a watch) is from the book
Jurassic Park by M Crichton.

Seiko

It was a watch
with a white rubber strap
and a sour odour.
Cheap.
But it never
stopped
running.
Ticked
loud enough for
the whole universe
to hear.
Even after I sprayed
DEET on it, and
the face went all
milky,
and I couldn’t tell
10 o’clock from
2 o’clock, it still
ticked off the seconds.
We parted company
in 1982.
I absent-mindedly
left it behind
on a shelf in
the women’s showers
at King’s Canyon.
My dad gave me
that watch.
Well
actually,
he gave me
the money,
and said
Go buy something.
