The Carved Wooden Indian Still Stands Outside the Post Office

I was right,
This is a small town.

A fishing port, mostly tourists.
Lighthouse by the carpark,
Metered parking nowadays.
Souvenir shop selling shells,

Dried twiggy seahorses,
Glass balls. All imported.
The ice cream shop’s
Closed until May.

Fish love
A dead quiet harbour.

    Oh, it’s cold – there’s a wind coming in off an iron grey sea. We might find a cafe, though, where we can sit and drink tea. We have to wipe condensation off the inside of the window to look out. We watch a man walking a small, grey dog. We order toasted teacakes and more tea.

      You pour. We watch yellow-legged gulls gliding, and wonder what it feels like to fly against the wind. A single high-pitched note whistles through the window frame.

    Love it! Last line is good fun!
    And by the way, this could be the Wisconsin Dells where my folks took me on vacation several years when I was I was in early elementary school. The obligatory shell shop, ice cream shop; and a candy shop with fudge, taffy, and all the jars of penny candies a kid loved in those days. I still have the old black and white photo of me standing beside the wooden statue of the Indian! Fun memories from your whimsical post!

    In the fall those places feels like a graveyard… so many things have changed, just proving how we are losing the past

    I love this, enjoying solitude I have visited such places where all is still except for the occasional tourist like myself who enjoy the serenes without the hustle of activity. Rather than think of dead I think of it as peace. Nice write.
