Haibun and a Twiglet

I.

It’s hot. Like record-breaking hot. I want to chill my skin across cold marble. Like shortcrust pastry needs. Or submerge myself into a wave, into the sequinned imagination of a mermaid. Like a cold water fish. Like a big old lazy cod. I want to hibernate in a green grassy mirage before I falter and fall like a scar.

blue as the sky
too vague around the edges
a scarlet swelter

II.

A Gelatinous Glisten

It’s hot. Vague
around the edges hot.
Record-breaking.
A scarlet swelter.
I want to chill my skin
on cold marble. Like
shortcrust pastry needs. Or
submerge myself in a wave, or

into sequinned imagination
of a carp.
A cold water fish. Like
a big old lazy cod.
I want to hibernate
in a green grassy mirage,
before I falter and
fall like a scar.

  4. This is amazing. I am always incredulous at the ideas you have and how the words are perfectly fit for those emotions/feelings/happening. Like these
” I want to chill my skin across cold marble. Like shortcrust pastry needs.”
This is SUCH an amazing two sentences and gets across exactly how hot it is! And that “scarlet swelter” — I keep thinking of a scarlet sweater — scratchy wool and too too hot.
I’m so late to reading haibun….catching up playing double duty while I’m hosting Poetics too!

  9. Marvelous! Especially, “chill my skin
on cold marble,” imagery that cools one off just reading the words.

  10. I love what happens when the same idea is echoed, but in a different form. It works very well here. (K)

  11. I really enjoyed the sensuous nature of this – the pasty on marble coolness – wonderful.
