For Twiglet #76

By Mail

I.
If I had cat
it would be asleep,
purring like a rattle
or an idling truck, and
the postman would
bring infinity by mail.

II.
I put a seashell to my ear,
and heard fishermen
emptying nets, and trees
dropping silver leaves like
lizard skins. But, alas,
it was just the postman
delivering the mail.

  1. With so little arriving by post – we mostly get adds and bills.
Charities and sales now call and refuse to leave their names much less messages… if you don’t pick up and say ‘Hello’.

  2. Some fantastic circles in imagery here – seashell, fishermen, trees, lizards, postman. Thought of the Philip Larkin lines – “Work has to be done. / Postmen like doctors go from house to house.”
