dVerse Feelings

A Second Reading

When I am gone
and critics give
my life a second reading,
will they know the right
questions, so they find
the kindest answers.

Which parts of me
will stay behind, and
which parts will sweep
along with the wind,
with the shadows.

Am I verb, or adjective.
A warm glow or
an indigo pool.
Was I the soap that
washed away your hope.

The gravity of questions;
so be kind, speak of me
in abstract statements,
beige flattened tones.
I once love that.

  1. It’s a lovely meditation on legacy and facing our mortality.

  2. That’s a very good point—will they ask the right questions and remember what ought to be remembered? I don’t know that they will. What is closest to our heart is not necessarily something that anyone else can know.

Personally I would rather be verb 🙂

  5. I love that part that Bjorn quoted. As for myself, I want to be remembered with kindness even sometimes I am not fully understood. Love your poem Misky!

  6. We can’t see ourselves as others see us, even in the present. But that doesn’t stop us from wondering. What will remain? (K)

  7. I liked these lines: “Was I the soap that
washed away your hope.” Very unusual use of “soap”.

  8. Interesting musings in your poem. I think sometimes it would be great to come back in a hundred years and see what happened to our memory, but on second thought, maybe not! Live in the moment.. it’s all we have!

  9. Really liked the third stanza! And don’t pay the critics much mind – we’ve learned to tune them out 🙂
