dVerse’s Memento

As It Once Was

It hangs, gilt frame,
and a sepia sketch. 1945.
Vesterport by Soren Frank.
The old tollgate
as it used to be
with the mayor’s house
on the right. Regency
windows, leaded and
multi-paned.
Two gas lights
by the door, electric
shines there now.
Square cobbles, a street,
a walk to the bakery.
The dress shop above.
Red tile roof catches
falling leaves.
This picture,
that time,
this memory
left to me because I
said I loved it.
I’ll leave it to the next
person who loves it.
But not quite yet.

This ink and watercolour painting was bequeathed to me by my in-laws. The artist lived locally in Faaborg, Denmark. I’ve loved this picture from the first day I saw it. It’s a joy to look at it; now hanging in my hallway. This piece is written for dVerse “Mementos”.

  1. A painting can somehow just bring us within…seem to be an intimate part of us. And sometimes, we’ve never been to that place or perhaps even understand the painting, but it seems to suddenly “get within us.” Your description here tells the meaning this piece has for you. Enjoyed this one very much!

  4. What a wonderful piece to remember, not just for the setting and the knowledge of the details but also for its history… it represent so much more than a loved picture.

  5. A thoughtful gesture for them to pass it on to you. Every work of art should be owned by someone who truly appreciates it. A lovely memento story to share. Thanks, Misky.

  8. Strange, isn’t it, the things to which our memories cling … a scent, a song, a touch, a painting. I enjoyed your story!

  9. Love this, Misky. My hubby and I only buy art that makes us want to literally sit inside the picture. This one would certainly apply. Perhaps a little table for two on that cobbled street. 🙂
