I.
Living In a Quiver

I remember your mouth, soft
and sea salt sweet, awake
as a scattered melody.
Lighthearted and revealing
as the moon’s careless truth.
Our buried whispers.
We moved through the years,
lost happily in a quiver.
Those memories are ghosts but
we’ll pretend we’re forever.

II.
Up In Smoke

He’d stack the wood, light
the fire, stuck newspaper up
the flue to draw smoke.
It didn’t work; never worked.
The house filled with smoke.
Mum opened every window as
smoke rolled from the fireplace.
Dad would shout, “Close those!”
Mum fanned the smoke about,
fanned memories into ghosts.

  1. Love your Quadrilles, Misky. The first one is romantic – timely for Valentine’s Day. I do like the sibilance in ‘sea salt sweet’ – it makes little sucking, kissing noises!I also like the phrases ‘scattered melody’ and ‘the moon’s careless truth’.
The second one is a snapshot of life and reminds me of my grandfather lighting the open fire when I was a child. Love that final line!

  2. Such elegantly penned quadrilles, Misky! Especially love “Our buried whispers.
We moved through the years, lost happily in a quiver. Those memories are ghosts but we’ll pretend we’re forever.”

  6. How those memories are ghosts. Sad, benign, or even haunting. You pinpoint the being of ghosts.

  9. Two delightful takes on the prompt. The first had me licking my own lips to imagine such ‘sea salt sweet’ and the second made me laugh out loud.

  10. Captivating studies of memory. In the first the vivid sensual memories contrast with buried whispers. In the second the vivid memory of making a fire becoming smoke (I enjoyed the burning of news as a second layer of memories)
