dVerse Haibun #30

Back When

back in the day when I wore pink gingham dresses and my cotton socks were lace trimmed, and my world seemed delightfully old as a smothering summer of wallflowers and big willows and poplars and broad brimmed sun-hats. back then when I was seven, or maybe it was eight, and I didn’t know about poverty or hunger or hate, and I never asked for anything except to run free in the forest. back then I was a different girl.

summer set us free
cold rain sticking in our throats
I’m a house of old souls

  1. I adore the nostalgic way… the innocence of summer and childhood… the illustration works so well without being a mere illustration…

  2. I too love the nostalgic feel to this and the Haiku really brings that home. Words and picture really work well together.

  3. There’s nostalgia, but the haiku adds a darker note. Things are different now.

  4. I liked the illustration. One has to find a way to run free in the forest again.

  6. Nice contrast between the carefree innocence of the prose and the slight chill of the poem.

  7. I love the innocence of childhood in your prose – it is different for children today with instant access to news we were shielded from when we were young.

  8. I think those moments can still be unveiled in the heart that desires to be like a child.

  9. I’m a house of old souls too. All I ever wanted to do was run free in the woods like a wild horse.

  10. Back when, invoking early memories, loved both. Watch out for a pingback.
