Miz Quickly’s Day 4: Unexpected Tales

The Night I Smiled at a Fox

I saw a fox in the garden last night. It was the colour of rusty iron. Or Kenyan soil. Sturdy little thing with a long thick tail, just like the tail on Daniel Boone’s hat — Fess Parker’s Daniel Boone. On telly. When I was twelve or so, I wanted to be Daniel Boone’s wife. I could smile like his Rebecca, be just as tough and wear long dresses in the forest and not fall over my skirts and hems or fallen logs or beavers. Back then I struggled with the wedge between fantasy, TV, Walt Disney and Wonder bread. I did know however that bologna was no good for me — it smelled, like Dad’s socks, which wasn’t good; Dad was a postman. But that fox, well, I can’t recall smiling quite so wide as when I saw it last night. For a brief moment, there was no wedge between me and nature — just the two of us, staring back at each other through a windowpane.

  1. They seem so beautiful and magical. We saw one a few weeks ago and were completely mesmerized by its stillness and its bright eyes. The perfect topic for a poem. I enjoyed this.

  2. Ah…Just like the night I saw a fox by the full moon in the snow in my yard.
Though I don’t believe the fox saw me…I smiled.

    1. This fox was about 2 feet from me. I’ve never been so close to such a creature before. It was amazing.

      1. My view was much further. Though also a few years back I saw a buck about 200 paces from me in my neighbors back yard. We did connect visually to each other – even through the mist.

Thanks for sharing and bringing forward amazing memories of natures animals.

  3. We had a mother and some pups this past year. Some nights we could hear her screaming, I guess to warn the pups are lead danger away. Spine tingling sound. I love being out where I can see wild life. It makes me smile too

    1. I used to listen to hares in the fields do the same. Horrific sound. Sounded like a child screaming.
