dVerse Quadrille #10

A Bit of Lunch with My Cousin

A piece of me came to visit,
a genetic piece — my cousin.
We shot the breeze over lunch.
Fish and chips
by the seaside,
Bank Holiday Monday.
Weather poured down on us,
and the wind howled fury —
my hair tangling in
ketchup and chips.

My cousin from America spent the past few days with me. Lovely visit. I miss family, miss sharing those sorts of moments. Makes me so happy that he made the effort to stop by and spend some time with me. And I took some poetic license with regard to the weather in this piece – yes, it was very windy but the rain didn’t arrive until today, so I’m glad that his visit wasn’t a complete wash-out by the weather. Written for dVerse Poets, Quadrille #10, include the word “Breeze”.

  2. I’m not certain, but I think you are the first to use ‘shot the breeze.’ How did we all miss that? I love that image detail about hair tangling in chips and ketchup – perfect!

    1. Perfect. Really perfect. And the weather turned rotten today, so that worked out okay, too, because he’s flying home today.

  6. Ahh, the joys of an English ‘summer’!! This reminds me of them! Sounds like you had fun anyway, and that’s the main thing. I really enjoyed your interpretation.

  7. I’ve got “pieces of me” across the ocean, too. So happy you’ve spent some time with your cousin. Shouldn’t have “shot” that breeze — made the weather mad! Fun 🙂

  8. What is a little distraction for a long-lost cousin. His presence is enough compensation!
