Sunday Whirl #250

Under a Bare Grey Block

There was always talk of her
slipping chains and those asylum gates.
She wandered about like a roadmap, and
always in a ranting chant. After a while,
the rumours flowed. Someone said that she
walked on water, but mostly they said
it was a bit of a show. People came
in masses when she dived off the waterfall.
She died of course, which stupored us
in a trance-ish-surprise. If she could
walk on water, (like the newspaper claimed)
then why couldn’t she dive off a waterfall,
and just fly or something. Like Jesus did.
He walked on water. That magician guy
walked on water, too, whatever his name
was. Anyway… the roadshow left town
after that incident, and the city buried
that woman under a bare grey block
of granite. No one knew her name.

  1. Amazing what enthralling snippets can come out of a dozen words!

  2. I feel sorry for her, Misky. To me, it seems she was judged and never listened to, driven to the end alone and unknown. And then forgotten.
It’s amazing where these words take us, isn’t it?

    1. So true how a few words can result in such differing pieces. Fun though – I love the Sunday Whirl.

  3. This reminds me of two old songs: “Bitter Green” by Gorden Lightfoot and “Delta Dawn” by Helen Reddy. I like the story you built with these words,

  5. The style of this poem is very effective…i think i heard the voice of a young person recounting..the logic seems flawless if you believe the gossip but that bare grey block of granite is most certainly and sadly real
