At an Intersection Named After an English King and a Saint
Six Sentence Story: Part 8 Starlight Shines on the Roof

By which I mean Nyx is scratching shadows and filling the street named after a saint with decomposing light.

Tedium … when I peel potatoes, my mind wanders –

and she didn’t ask Hades’ permission, – Nyx chose to live there in the deepest level of the Underworld, in shadows and night … I reach for another potato and continue peeling … and I prefer to sit in a room with the lights off, by myself, preferring windows to stay blank until I chose to fill them.

Arpège’s kitchen is an Underworld with the exhaust fan’s hungry eye of heat dispersing fumes of seared black and blue steak, and fish into an orbit of cosmic dust … particle theory, I think that’s what it is – you send something out into universe and something always comes back.

“No, Pierre, I can’t hear a thing over this exhaust fan – I need ear-defenders against this noise.”

And Pierre stands beside me, his voice is as sharp as wind across a field of grain – he’s mesomorphic, and I swear he’s the result of the particle theory.

“Brigid, table 3 has changed their bloody minds … again … new potatoes and mixed veg instead of baked potatoes and salad, on both orders, and I’m thinking of telling them to come back here and cook it themselves,” he growls.

    1. That’s certainly what ‘front of house’ maintains to a customer but ‘back of house’ speaks a different language. 😂

  4. Don’t they know they can come back another night and place a different order, get something new every time?

    1. No, they really don’t, Mimi! They go to the same restaurant and order the same thing off an unchanging menu.
