12 June: Ten Things of Thankful

In no particular order, so left unnumbered

Thankful to be with my son, his wife, and my grandchildren. On the left, my eldest, who just retired as Captain in the Navy, and on the right, my granddaughter, Emma, who starts her senior year of high school this autumn. She and I are very close.

Thankful to see a cardinal (bird) 🤣 in all its glorious colour. This is a first for me; we don’t have them in England.

I am thankful for minimalist advertising boards (or shingles as we call them) — artistic and well thought out, rather than what’s seen on local highway billboards in VA. This one is a beauty.

I am thankful for brass-gear, hand-wound, century-old clocks that still function as clocks. Their care is a labour of love and a skill being lost to digital time-keeping.

One of a few magnolia blossoms still left on a tree in North Carolina. Beautiful. Thankful to see the real thing in the right setting.

The old brick Currituck Beach lighthouse at Corolla, Outer Banks, North Carolina. I saved myself $13 (and considerable pain) by declining to climb to the top for a view.

I am thankful to have seen this in person. Kitty Hawk (or the Wright Brothers’ Plane, since Kitty Hawk is the name of town). In the distance through the window, you’ll see a tall white monument —this is from where the flight took off. It’s quite a high mound.

Forever thankful for the beauty of trees.

Your love returned.

(wild horses on Kill Devil Hill Beach, the Outer Banks) I am thankful for this moment. It will stay with me forever.

The tenth one I’ll keep to myself.

  3. I could relate to much of your list this week. My brother, a captain in the Navy reserves, will be retiring later this year, and he has a daughter named Emma, too.

I love old clocks. Sadly, not all of mine are in working order. It is challenging to find repair places nowadays.

We have different approaches to towers; when my husband and I travel, if there is a tower, it must be climbed! LOL (However, I certainly can appreciate saving pain and money!)

    1. I hope your brother’s retirement is a smooth and happy transition. It’s a big step.

  4. Good call on the $13 and the stationary stairmaster* the problem with a good idea like, ‘let’s climb to the top’ is that it is necessary to climb back down and stair are peculiar that way. Unlike hills and valleys where the decent is often less taxing, stairs? not so much (and going up you have a choice, ‘I think this is enough exercise…lets quit while we’re ahead. once to the top? the same except, I mean seriously, the novelty is kinda done)

not a bird person, but cardinals are pretty striking (and really, really aggressive… with the color, like that comes as a surprise)

haven’t been to the Outer Banks… looks very enticing

    fun Ten

    1. Too right about steps; going down uses a whole different set of muscles. I’ve come to that age where I just tell the younger ones to take a photo at the top so I can see the view.

Heading back to the UK today (overnight flight). My next TToT might be a bit late (laundry; jet lag; extreme heat in SE England for the next few weeks).
