22 May: A Six – Part 10: To Trace a Curl

At an Intersection Named After an English King and a Saint
Six Sentence Story: Part #10 To Trace a Curl

The Six Sentence Cafe and Bistro is on the edge of razor-sharp tonight.

In a corner booth near the back of the room sits a man who’s built for a rugby scrum. He’s with a woman with chalk-white hair who is wearing a low-cut black dress so plain and nondescript that most would find it a challenge to describe it the next morning.

His name is Pierre – he’s nursing a scotch, the golden liquid catching the light as it swirls in the glass, and her name is Brigid – she’s drinking fizzy water and Rose’s lime juice in a tall glass loaded with ice cubes.

He focuses on the stage while she listens to the music, her eyes closed, vaguely aware, swaying as if balancing on sea legs, and he’s not sure if she’s just lost in the music or falling asleep.

  1. Subtly intense Six, M.

Seems that the music I heard ( I mean the Gatekeeper) out of Brigid’s apartment, “I Walk With Ghosts”, was prophetic.

  3. One of the attributes of (the SSC&B) is it’s affinity for spirits, both literal and metaphoric, after all, an imaginary gathering place in a virtual world would be nothing if not a blank canvas.

(Tempted to paste a Joe Jackson tune to soundtrack the presence of Connor, but you probably have the song now nesting in your auditory lobe… sorry)

    Fun Six.

    1. Yes, the place is buzzing with ectoplasm, and by all means, do it – Connor needs soundtracking. Glad you enjoyed it, Clark.

      1. Geez, Misky. Wth is up with Clark?! Since he’s gone awol, “allow me to retort” with a Joe song came to mind – more for our lovelorn Pierre …

        1. Fabulous! I haven’t heard this song in ages, and its association with poor pining Pierre gave me a good laugh. Now I need a backstory for Connor! Thanks for the soundtrack, Denise. Loved it.

  4. I like how you introduced Connor to the series of tales. I wonder how Pierre is going to react to him. Brigid doesn’t seem to mind.

  5. So vividly intense, I can almost feel the fizz of Rose’s lime juice on my tongue. And then that sad twist in the end, delivered so gently, and with such devastation!

  6. Like Brigid’s black dress, your Six is simple, yet elegant, Misky.

Love how you crafted the scene for Pierre to enter 1st person. But what a crushing blow when he realized Brigid was somewhere (sometime) else.

Looking forward to next week’s installment.
