It's Still Life

Inside a Whisper (a 50-line Blitz Poem)

Every journey ends inside my eyes
Every story from me is alive inside
Inside, I’ve named every tree
Inside is the depth of one word sentences
Sentences long as weeks
Sentences too full of words
Words dark as suffering
Words for a tulip without its petals
Petals white as salt
Petals red as a pepper
Pepper will float but still I’ll sink
Pepper to set hell on fire
Fire that once inhaled me
Fire that touches you and I
I want to lie down with you
I want your warmth on a hot night
Night’s consolation is a rising moon
Night’s avalanche is its stars
Stars to cool a lustful breeze
Stars cold as war’s ice
Ice that sets a foot to slip
Ice and whisky, a taste of night
Nights for basking in one another
Nights are made for it
It’s line 25, the halfway point
It’s the summer of Santana
Santana coming through the radio
Santana teasing my hips
Hips wrapped in silken memories
Hips that moved the past
Past worlds that I’ve left in ruins
Past, lingering as my echoes
Echoes deep in my veins
Echoes stealing my music
Music playing with my ribs
Music punctuating my name
Name it their loss, as they did
Name it our loss, as did we
We drew different lines on the horizon
We drew pictures of verbs
Verbs were another word for gods
Verbs were wounds to touch
Touch my palm and read my heart
Touch my future in your tea leaves
Leaves drawn like moths to candlelight
Leaves that fall on us like a whisper
Whisper of words heard by the wind
Whisper into the throat of night
Night
Wind
