11 January: A White Wolf for dVerse

AI artwork: a wolf in a snowy forest

White Wolf

This wolf, white as light,
single-minded, truth and insight,
sees through my human stories.

The ones I believe of myself.
The ones I ask others to believe.
The ones I trim for appearance sake.

And those stories
have substance,
and my substance casts dark shadows.

Stories are shadows, and reflections,
so if the wolf is light,
I am the one casting dark shadows,

… not the wolf.

This wolf doesn’t hide in a pine pole forest.
It keeps itself in open view,
true, and howls at the moon.

Perhaps this wolf is what I avoid in myself.
Perhaps it is the myth that I give it.
Metaphor or not,

somewhere in my own myth a wolf resides.

  1. I love the play on darkness and light in your white wolf poem, Marilyn, and the way you play with myths and words, especially in these lines:
    ‘And those stories
    have substance,
and my substance casts dark shadows’
    and
‘Perhaps it is the myth that I give it.
    Metaphor or not,
somewhere in my own myth a wolf resides.’

  2. Beautiful and captivating, to be like the wolf; I really like the juxtaposition of the wolf being white and the shadows not belonging to it, but are there as a contrast.

  3. What a moving, introspective, and captivating verse, Misky. We live two myths I think: the one of which we are conscious and the other the shadows of our acts creates. Have a lovely day

  4. What a beautiful white wolf that shines an interior light in your soul, a being of strong vision (“single-minded, [with] truth and insight”) that though it casts into sharp relief how shadowed your projected stories of yourself are (“The ones I trim for appearance sake”), this wolf/muse/light, nevertheless stays with you, and “doesn’t hide in a pine pole forest./It keeps itself in open view,/true, and howls at the moon”! I adore this wolf, Misky, strong and steady in its desire (as I see it) to help you let go and be yourself, to “howl” with it and enjoy the music of the story/myth that is the authentic you. I love too that it is a wolf. Wolves have always seemed to me to have a vision that sees through things, to want to communicate truths. I think that’s part of what I too am responding to in your poem which is simply wonderful. Thank you so much for joining in the prompt, Misky.
