20 November: Usaquen Street Vendor

Colombian street vendor, black and white photography

I took this photo five years ago in the Usaquen District of Bogotá, Colombia. He was selling jewellery – speaking with customers in an easy, comfortable way, his back resting against the white-washed wall of a churchyard. I remember thinking this was probably the most visually perfect man I’d ever seen.

And then close by, a mother slapped her young child who let out a long fierce cry, and the man’s expression turned to incinerating fury. I took the photo, and forever linked him with that moment of transformation.

  4. As a former counselor who has seen too much of child abuse, I concur with his expression. A wonderful photo. The past three days have been grueling at work. Worked til 4 in the morning last night bringing blood to a gunshot and stab victim … so that is why I have not been visiting of late. “Saving Lives” as my supervisor says! 🙂
