7 September: A Thursday Door

This door is the entrance to St Marien Lutheran Church, Osnabrück, Germany. It was first mentioned in records in 1177. Gothic construction finished in 1440.

The figures around the door frame represent the Clever and the Foolish Virgins. On the left-hand side are the figures of the five Clever Virgins, led by the “Ecclesia”, and on the right are the four Foolish ones, led by the “Synagogue”. The biblical allegory of the Clever and the Foolish Virgins is often found on sacred buildings in Germany.

Bushboy (Brian Dodd) shares photos of doors, but not just any doors. Spectacular doors from his journeys. Dan’s Thursday Doors opened the door on this. I love doors of all sorts. I’ve trawled through my holiday snaps and found a few to share.

  2. That is a magnificent entrance. You don’t often see blue doors on churches, but those are beautiful. Thanks for the explanation, too.
