31 May: Two dVerse

woman in red. colours red and black. Fiery. Chilli hot.

He Doesn’t Know She Eats These Like Sweets

He’s crowing on again,
eating chilli peppers –
it is a manly thing.

Can’t bear it when he’s peacocking.

He fishes around
for another jalapeño.
Pops it in. Chews.
Sticks his tongue out.

Come on, he says, Eat one.
Oh, to fawn girliness, or not!

  1. Double prompting! Impressive 🤩
There’s a whole story packed into this little pepperpot of a poem. Love ‘peacocking’ and ‘fawn girliness ‘.

  3. Girl power, baby!
I can remember as a little girl watching my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother eating hot Italian peppers, noses running and tears streaming down their faces. When I asked them why they were crying, they responded “Così dolce!”, which means “(This is) so sweet!”. Naturally, I wanted a taste of this sweetness and my mother cut off a tiny piece of the hot pepper for me. Immediate my mouth felt like it was on fire but I refused to spit it out. We are made of sturdier stuff than that!
    Yep; girl power, baby!

    1. I always thought as we aged we wanted milder foods. I’ve gone the opposite for some reason. LOL!

      1. And I’ve gone in the opposite direction, too. Now if I eat anything spicy, I better have the Pepto nearby! 🥴

  4. Ugh peacocking. Though I am guilty of it too, insecurity lays under that blanket. Love how the title presences the observer, and how this and everything is really about her

  5. Yes! Peacocking is a good one – a fun theme to do. Quadrilles always make me think of Lobsters…

  6. I saw the title and smiled – it could only be a combination of Quadrille and Poetics – and what a good one! I think eating chilli peppers is a manly thing – they upset my stomach. I love the choice of animal verbs too, especially ‘Can’t bear it when he’s peacocking’.

  7. Crowing and peacocking about eating hot peppers is such an odd behavior. And yet, there’s even a popular show where you just watch a person eat hotter and hotter sauces. Fun poem.

Thanks for joining in. By the way, I think you are one word short. Removing an apostrophe may remedy that.
