Miz Quickly’s 16 July Reworked

Do Ants Squint into the Wind (Reworked)

Do ants stop,
as I do,

and listen
to thunder roll.

Do they

lift their feet
in the snow.

On hot sand.

In knee-deep
depths of
rain.

Do their eyes squint in the sun.

Do they know
come July

they’ll sprout wings
and fly.

Why do they
bubble up from
roots of trees,

spread
across the lawn,

like a springtime
flood.

Ants crawling up
the wall,

bronze and black,
weightless,

do they have
a mindful purpose.

Do ants squint into the wind.
