A Gathered Net

And what if my brown-eyed wishes
gathered into a fisherman’s net, into
oil and greased twine and knot, and
soused silver-finned fish big as
a whitened loaf. Would all my
wishes come home to roost, if my
wishes were kisses, would I be loved.

  1. Such a stunning visual here, Misky. All that “oil and greased twine and knot.” You have such a way with words.

  5. This feels like it’s part of something much bigger and older. It has a mythic reverb to it.

    1. Glenn thought it felt biblical. Not my intention, but … okay.

  6. Wow. Your words and photo like a quiet story of longing. I like the combination of elements you used to share the desire for love beyond pinks and chocolate. Love is complicated.

A very strong metaphor here, that is classic, even a bit biblical. The coy turn at the end lightens the mood.

  10. If my wishes were kisses, I would not want them gathered into
“oil and greased twine and knot.” I will not kiss a fish, even for love.

  11. Love the opening especially, brown eyed wishes gathered like fish in a net; strong language.

  13. I love those ‘what if…brown-eyed wishes’, Misky, and the fisherman‘s [net] ‘oil and greased twine and knot’ – I can imagine him hauling you in. Such fabulous sounds of the sea and longing in ‘soused silver-finned fish’ and ‘wishes were kisses’.

  14. Wow, this is so good — the metaphor and the language add into this yearning for love and acceptance. Alas! There’s a disclaimer attached of being caught in that fishnet and the wishes end up having a multidimensional existence.

  15. brown-eyed wishes…..and then they’re told. The idea of gathering them into a net…and then using the words “oil and greased twine and knot,”. It’s as if there’s a roughness, a harshness surrounding her (my assumption of gender). The entanglement of the fish then caught in the net….unlike the wishes she’s placed or “gathered” in the net. Could they all be kissed true? I read this three times and each time a layer comes through to me. In some ways, it’s a bit mysterious…I want to know who she is…what her life has been….why a fishing net? Perhaps she lives in a small fishing village…oooooh I wish you would keep going with this!

  18. When it was a big thing (might still be) to have plastic to hold six packs of cans – I knew a gent who cut up that plastic before trashing just so animals of any kind wouldn’t get stuck…

Fisherfolk need to eat, but boy that’s a sad photo. So many great lines in you verse.
