A Poem Starting with a Line by Lee Herrick
This one happens in the morning
as a nearby crow wakes me.
Chips of memory keep rising
to the surface, as if there’s
some small bit in me, you know,
like an overly excited egg timer
proclaiming This Is The End,
like Jim Morrison sang.
You know that Doors song.
What do you mean, you never liked The Doors.
How could we be married for 38 years, and
I never knew you didn’t like the Doors.
But I’m determined to keep all
my errant pieces still, all my
words in order, and I say,
That’s okay. I’ll still love you
long after I wake from this dream.
And you wink as if you know
how everything is going to end.
First stanza is from “THREE DREAMS OF KOREA: NOTES ON ADOPTION”, By Lee Herrick. For Nudge #18
