It's Still Life

She Believes in Battle’s End

But she doesn’t believe
in monsters in shadows.
She believes

that heaven’s rain
can cleanse a soul.
Her life is tread

with care and led
in contemplative prayer.
And her crucifix,

that sterling shape,
for safety’s sake,
is her key to heaven.

And I still wonder,
is it wrong to long
for pageantry …
