Trees Amongst the Forest

So that’s what you meant when
you said, Welcome to the Forest —

but I only know the chorus.
Never learned the whole song.

The trees turned,
murmured unearthly tones,

Does she burn as we do,
they breathed.

I never learned
the whole song.

  1. There is a murmuring sound in the forest. I like how they might be noticing us passing through wondering if we burn like they do.

Especially: does she burn as we do…
can we ever explain that to a tree

    1. From Wikipedia: in some fire-adapted cedars and pines, the seeds may be stored in closed cones for up to 60–80 years, being released only when a fire kills the parent tree.
