dVerse Parallelism & Repetition

crowfences

20th January: West Sussex

the sun rises across the leaves,
daffodils sprout, a green as tight
as clasped hands, and I’m half-hid
behind a steaming cup of tea.

and I woke with a headache today,
Peder’s caught The Queen’s Cough,
the dog’s nerves are humming,
and I’m at war with bone-breaking cold.

and there was a time when I feared war.
Now I fear plastics and palm oil
and sugar, strangers and loud noises,
and I still fear bone-breaking cold.

there’s a heron on the roof, and crows
on the fence but neither seems to mind
this blanket of fog, and I’m half-hid
behind a steaming cup of tea.

  1. I like the atmosphere in this .. and really relate to ‘bone-breaking cold’ sometimes even sharper when the thermometer rises just above zero C —fully relate to the second last stanza.

  2. I love the ‘steaming cup of tea’ holding the whole poem in a cup of comfort to hide behind.

    1. I lived through a handful of wars and “conflicts”, and I know I can survive those (as unpleasant as they are) but microscopic plastic floating in my blood stream is horrifying. Or falling on ice, like did this week and injured myself. Fears change.

  7. I started off singing this poem to a tuneless heavy bass blues song. Great use of repetition in this.

  8. Very atmospheric, Misky. Here in Cheshire, things are oddly warm for the time of the year… buds are appearing on trees… I fear the cold coming back with a vengeance.

    1. The weather is doing a north south divide lately. The daffy are 2″ high but everything else is well tucked away for now.
