Pastel Chalk and Yellow Bees

Never understood it,
how birds and bees
could do the sex thing.
Our teacher, who always
smelled of orange rinds,

she’d draw flowers with
pastel chalk, yellow bees
with fragile fairy wings.
And those pointy arrows,
tips piercing pink blossoms,

and connect grinning bees
with dots. Third grade
science — it was a fantasy.
It never happened that
way on my grandma’s farm.

Some classrooms are places of wonder, others are not, but farms always are!

  7. This is pure delight, Misky. I love that teacher who smells of orange rinds. And I’ve never quite caught on to what they use birds and bees, either.

  9. A kid would remember her teacher smelling of orange rinds…so cute. Love the perspective of a child trying to picture what that teacher was trying to convey. Love this, Mish.
